CERT Field Day – After Action Report

The North Richland Hills Amateur Radio Club (NRH ARC) recently showcased its dedication to community service by actively supporting NRH Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Class 23 during their Field Day. After a brief “rain delay” (sprinklers), club members were able to set up their stations and get on the air. Later in the day, they took on the role of victims for the CERT response exercises.

While this event was primarily focused on aiding the CERT team, club members also participated in the several on-air activities. One of which was the Texas QSO Party, which involved making contact with as many Texas counties and other states as possible. This gave the club members a chance to demonstrate the capabilities of amateur radio to the CERT class members.

The Hurricane Watch Net was active on 14.325 MHz for Post-Tropical Cyclone Lee in Nova Scotia. James Flanagan (AE5FL) was able to demonstrate regional NVIS propagation by making SSB phone contacts in Dallas, McLennan, Brazoria, Bastrop, and Fayette counties. Pete Bauer (KI5HSE) and Travis Logan (AG5YM) showcased digital modes with FT8 and by sending one of the CERT students an email via Winlink.

More time was spent chatting with the other club members and answering insightful questions from the CERT class than making contacts. But these interactions are pivotal, as they not only promote mutual respect but also foster a sense of community.

By aiding the CERT team and showcasing amateur radio’s potential, club members were able to make a small contribution to community preparedness. This event served as a testament to our commitment to the community and its role in inspiring the next generation of amateur radio enthusiasts.
